CHAPTER SIX

THE sound of the waterfall thundering down the rocks was like the finale of some dramatic symphony as she finished speaking, and she watched Connor silently, wondering how he’d react to her revelation. He looked stunned for a second, his eyes wide with shock.

‘You poor thing,’ he murmured. ‘That was bad news.’

Victoria continued sadly, ‘We had such fun, Andy and I. Everybody loved him because he was a kind, generous guy. He was my first proper boyfriend—I’d always been rather lacking in confidence where men were concerned, but he made me feel I was the most beautiful girl in the world.’

Connor felt a jolt of remorse—could her lack of confidence in men have stemmed from the way he’d put her down at the school dance? Such a transient thing, but it could have been the catalyst to make her lose her self-belief. What a bastard he’d been, he reflected. However, Victoria was still talking, lost in the story of her marriage, and he listened to her intently.

‘Suddenly everything in my life seemed rosy—I loved my job, and he was doing so well with every prospect of becoming a consultant.’ She sighed. ‘I don’t know how long his affair had been going on, but it was only when a party of us were down at the beach one day and I was walking along the sand dunes that I almost literally stumbled over the two of them…’

Her voice dropped to a whisper and Connor prompted her gently. ‘It must have been terrible for you.’

Victoria shrugged. ‘I felt a fool. I’d had absolutely no idea what was happening, and yet I suspect some of our friends were aware of it. Our marriage had been a total sham.’

‘He should have been honest and told you,’ said Connor harshly. ‘Even if he hadn’t been sure about his sexuality, it was cruel to deceive you in that way.’

‘Perhaps he thought he loved me once, but now I’m inclined to believe he married me because it would help further his career. And I know he wanted children, but in a conventional manner. Andy just wasn’t brave enough to come out and say or admit to himself what he really was.’ Then she added rather angrily, ‘But in doing so he broke my heart—and took five years of my life away.’

‘And you were thousands of miles away from home and felt especially vulnerable,’ remarked Connor.

She nodded. ‘That’s right. So, you see, I don’t think I’m a good judge of husband material, and that’s why I can never take a chance on love again.’

He tilted her chin up with his hand and looked down at her strangely, his eyes traversing her face, lingering for a second on the sweep of her lashes, then focussing on her parted lips. His voice was rough. ‘You know, Freckles, you’ve got to stop looking back. You were duped into a marriage on false promises, but you’re free as a bird now—free to do anything you want. And you’re not the first person this has happened to.
